Il “Paesaggio” e le sue rappresentazioni come soggetto indipendente ha visto in Giappone uno sviluppo molto diverso rispetto all’Occidente, specchio quindi di quella cultura, da sempre intrinsecamente legata al paesaggio e alla natura, elemento fondamentale nella spiritualità shintoista e buddista. Un percorso dalle immagini dei nobili di corte, ai dipinti monocromatici dei monaci buddisti, per arrivare alle stampe ukiyo-e della cultura cittadina del periodo Edo e concludere con l’incontro con le scuole di pittura occidentali.

The development of the “Landscape” and its representation as an independent subject took a very different route in Japan to the West. It is therefore a mirror of Japanese culture, which has always been intrinsically linked to the landscape and nature, a fundamental element in Shinto and Buddhist spirituality. A journey from the images of the nobles of the court through the monochrome paintings of Buddhist monks to the ukiyo-e prints of the urban culture of the Edo period, and concluding with the encounter with the Western schools of painting.
