COMICS EXHIBITION FROM BEIJING AND HONG KONG
VISIONARIO – DURING SCREENING HOURS
FROM APRIL 20TH to MAY 20TH
Exactly forty years have passed since “Mao’s comics” (1971), an anthology edited, among others, by Umberto Eco, which introduced to Italy the unknown production of popular Chinese comics that carried a pedagogy and propaganda mark. Nowadays new Chinese comics are undoubtedly one the most innovative contemporary scene in the international panorama and are completely emancipated not only from the American influence but also from the Japanese imaginary, that has been predominant in China just like everywhere in the East. While in Hong Kong at the beginning of this decade “Springrolllll” came to life and flourished, as a collective/magazine that has truly become a cult phenomenon, which brought the two founding members Hok Tak Yeung and Chihoi Lee to gain international recognition with shows and exhibitions in the most important European festivals, in Beijing an “anti-manga” feeling developed, mixing local tradition with German, Finnish, Canadian influences. Chinese islands is an exhibition project which, for the first time in Europe, presents a collective show of the best contemporary Chinese production.
